Sure, there were less mobs, and you still kind of do need a shelter now in Minecraft, but it felt so much more unsettling when you couldn’t just squeeze yourself as tight as you could into some corner of a house with every door bolted shut. I can remember being about six, peering over the edge of my unlit rooftop and under the dark of night barely distinguishing a skeleton for the first time in my Minecraft life and being so scared that I wouldn’t leave the in-game bedroom the whole night. I was just happy that it hadn’t seen me and that my house was tall enough that it probably couldn’t get in, even if i didn’t know for sure.
It was a lot more different when you didn’t know anything about this huge and extremely atmospheric game, and suddenly in the pitch dark of alpha night you came to the disturbing realization that you weren’t alone. I would almost associate it with the feeling cavemen must have felt when in a new territory

11/05/2023 @lightningkitten: @natashalife2517 i upped the brightness in an editor and it's not really discernable for me but i'd say it's vaguely like a silhouette of a minecraft dude with a slightly rounded head and a couple slightly lighter spots that might be eyes, but honestly it's abstract enough on its own to just be visual noise. haven't seen the full video catalog so i'll probably figure it out later
