"Minecraft Playstation Edition" is a game developed by Mojang Studios in the Year 1998 in a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the Playstation Console released in 1994, this game was a pre-cursor to the classic 'Minecraft' of 2009, although not many people are aware of it due to it being pulled from store shelves just a year after release with only a 1000 or so copies ever being sold, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a copy at a retro game store about a month ago, here's my experience with the title.
If you'd like to play the game yourself via emulation here's a link to a rom to download as finding a physical copy like myself is nearly impossible to do: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/mcsx-minecraft-ps1-edition
Thanks to xKazIsKooIx for ripping the game files to allow others to play the game
Any help to learn more about the game would be appreciated as I'm still learning about it myself and plan to continue my exploration into the title more on this channel

02/05/2024 @cjaawesome616: I've been playing on emulator recently and I think there is a solution to the voices. Walking on carpet helps the voices go away. I think it is some sort of sanity mechanic. It is crazy how much of a different vision mojang had in this version
02/05/2024 @shibainu2528: It seems to be eerily similar to a Java Minecraft mod, same sound design and (as far as I can tell) similar monster models.
If that mod can be used as a "wiki" of sorts, maybe you can do some things in the PSX version. Like eating good food, sleeping, fishing, walking on paths / carpets, etc. And avoid other actions like staying in the dark, getting hurt, or killing too many animals.
If I had to guess. Whatever demon is possessing the game is using Minecraft as a "cover" and using modern quality of life or content mods to make itself more "appealing". That, or the mod developers have some explaining to do.
02/05/2024 @nathannightmare1604: @shibainu2528 I think it's worth trying, there definitely seems to be a sanity mechanic, especially considering all the weird stuff disappeared after he died. So it seems like dying also resets it.
02/05/2024 @someonecalledrichardthehuman: @shibainu2528 Also it could be possibly tied to the "mood" value that causes cave sounds, kinda like a more developed version of it.
02/05/2024 @lincolnschweers3153: The sound design for this series is absolutely amazing. Every little click from the controller and all the intense ambient sounds really makes it so much more authentic
02/05/2024 @-Hyxel-: i dont understand. how is it authentic if it's real?
02/05/2024 @gamezboi_: @-Hyxel- thats what i was thinking
02/05/2024 @juliandevinny7173: @-Hyxel- Minecraft never came to ps1 dude 😂😂😂
02/05/2024 @-Hyxel-: (Hush- I'm playing along!)
02/05/2024 @Tergg246: The controller is probably real theres a mod for controller use
02/05/2024 @sporeham1674: Only thing I can take issue with, is a ps1 sounds nothing like that while reading a disc, but the real sound is a super low hum that would be quite hard to hear over anything else, so I understand the choice 100% from a sound design perspective
02/05/2024 @resistantlucario6910: A tip: Since you can screenshot by pressing back and can view those screenshots in game, added by the fact these screenshots still include coordinates, you can take a screenshot inside or around your house and use said screenshot to help you get back home.
On another note this series is absolutely spectacular. Love to see these uploads, thanks for doing this!
02/05/2024 @Garden0flowr: I never knew this, thats so cool
04/05/2024 @shadow-squid4872: Or just use a good old pen and paper and write down the coordinates just like how you would in 1998

Sleep message: "You are too scared to sleep" replaced the normal message
Morse code: The disc scratches in episode 4 is slowed down Morse code (according to qoreqore)
02/05/2024 @q0reqore: another thing to add. in the loading screens if you speed them up the disc scratches from the ps1 reading the disc is morse code (in the 4th episode not this one)
09/05/2024 @KefkeWren: From what I can recall, armor giving less defense as it degrades was a mechanic in the "Beta" releases of Minecraft on PC. Swords in PS edition also appear to have no cooldown, like in older Java editions. Could suggest that the current combat mechanics are a genuinely new system to modern versions.
02/05/2024 @tobbyhappy3572: Found a copy of this game at a garage sale a while back in 2022, I'm glad to see more people are discovering it despite all the odd bugs.
02/05/2024 @jupiter7194: I made a Reddit for this channel, though I’ve never really used Reddit and don’t know how to operate it and I just would really like to see this flourish and grow into something super big and cool
02/05/2024 @bunnyqueen20XX: Gonna link it?
02/05/2024 @shibainu2528: So I did some digging in the files, and I think I found some old save files in the "memcard2" folder. There's also a screenshots folder with a single screenshot labelled "1999-05-17_10.30.43" of a pitch black room, the HUD is visible except for the experience bar, paperdoll (The little guy in the corner) and coordinates. The player has no health, hunger, or armor, and they are holding nothing but a pair of shears in their offhand.
If I had to guess, you could probably drag and drop the world files into either the ROM's save files, or since they look eerily similar to Java's world files, even load it up in a Java client to see what happens.
Edit : Heck, maybe if you have the proper converter, you can convert a memory card to USB and access the Memory Card 2 files, drag them onto your desktop, swap the USB to Memory Card 1, then drag a few world files onto that so you can play them on your Playstation.
02/05/2024 @kameleon_rap: That's crazyyy
02/05/2024 @mez1nec: Dang. My grandpa had disk with it for his dusty ps1. I remember playing it with him all day. He was saying that while playing alone he was hearing voices or something. Only now I belive him.... Probably should visit him and play together again
02/05/2024 @hayato1886: The thing that killed you, i believe its called a rotten stalker and i think it spawns alongside the voices after a certain amount of time has passed. They behave similarly to endermen, including the eyecontact means they aggro, must be using the same ai, but they do not take damage in water and are much, much more aggressive and deal more damage. I think they're unkillable as well but I haven't had time to test if other sources of damage such as lava or tnt. Also to note, the deep dark is in this version surprisingly, really is incredible that they had it back in 98 along with all the other stuff. I figured that out while I was in a cave in my world that I started, accidentally spawned a warden. It was terrifying
10/05/2024 @gaminganimators7000: I love your profile pic btw
02/05/2024 @nathannightmare1604: You know, I been thinking about it, it's possible that there might be a sanity mechanic to this version of the game.
09/05/2024 @KefkeWren: It's funny just how normal this episode seems.
02/05/2024 @Korushin-V: One thing i realized is that, since the game goes up to at least 1.17, possibly beyond, this version my have features that aren't in the current version of java and bedrock but will be added in the future. This game can be used to PREDICT THE FUTURE OF MINECRAFT
02/05/2024 @BrokenStart: not sure if i just missed them but im starting to think these invisible things are supposed to be an older version of the enderman, maybe their gimmic was different during their early drafts kus i don`t thing we`ve seen any since ep 1
02/05/2024 @Tergg246: Imagine playing this in VR
02/05/2024 @MrYummitheavergedude: I remember back in the days, one of my friends invited me to his house and he had that game on his game shelf, he said that he never played but now lost it now a while back
02/05/2024 @thatguysmile: This is genuinely such an interesting concept and I kinda love it
02/05/2024 @JustMatt87: Bro, i was started this series after waking up early and thinking a nice boring Minecraft playthrough would be good to fall back asleep to..... Here i am like 3 hours later and haven't fallen back asleep.. and honestly dont think i will ever be able to 😱😱😱😰😰👹
02/05/2024 @idkwhattocallthis646: found some unused stuff
like stuff as in physical items
after speaking with one of the people that made the physical copies, there was originally gonna be a memory card packed in there
but they didn’t have the money to make the memory cards to make the memory cards, which were minecraft themed, to be put into the case
they didn’t remember much but they did remember there was a survival world and a creative world to show others some inspiration
02/05/2024 @signpost_fanatic: hi cool misinformation
02/05/2024 @idkwhattocallthis646: @signpost_fanatic this channel uses a mod for minecraft psx on curseforge, its not a real game, people play along and im just playing along with unused content
02/05/2024 @idkwhattocallthis646: @signpost_fanatic and before you question the short and the first documentation, look in the description of the video until you see the curseforge link, we’re just playing around, we are just goofing around
02/05/2024 @idkwhattocallthis646: @signpost_fanatic then why are you watching this channel then?
02/05/2024 @Pwnz0rServer2009: "but they didn’t have the money to make the memory cards to make the memory cards" ah yes english
02/05/2024 @idkwhattocallthis646: @Pwnz0rServer2009 thanks for pointing out the spelling error, made the comment late at night
02/05/2024 @Xegit: Hey! I just discovered this, it's really interesting.
Getting to the point quickly, my dad said once "Hey.. i used to play that game" when i was playing minecraft, i was like "really??" and he was like "yeah.. around the late 90's.. somewhere there." and then i was confused, because i thought the game was never available until 2009, but now i think i believe him.
He said he may have some copies somewhere around his room, so i'll try to search them and look through it to see if i can experience this!
Though.. he also mentioned this game was definitely a horror one disguised as a normal game.. which is interesting.
04/05/2024 @Nate_here: Amazing! Have you found it ?
04/05/2024 @Xegit: @Nate_here Ah, i haven't updated it recently right.
Nope, haven't found it unfortunately, i'm gonna make sure to keep looking though! My house is kind of big..
02/05/2024 @lovecrisis619: 5:18 lol he finally noticed he had some iron
02/05/2024 @raygagnon4809: Got a question nobody asked before about this… if everything from modern Minecraft is here… then were mo creatures (the one that “added the horse”) and the “mod” that added the piston even mods are were secret mojang “mods” to make it look like they added creatures and items from mods into Minecraft?
02/05/2024 @BANCLAMOFFICIAL: WOO! New PSXCraft
02/05/2024 @FrioTheDerg: 8:56
The Fabled Banjo Madman
(The joke is that due to the sped up footage, the banjo in the song is, well, extremely fast.)
02/05/2024 @nathannightmare1604: The death got rid of the whispers!
02/05/2024 @Bruh-ps2lh: Lets goo new upload :D
02/05/2024 @bbredster: Let's go another video keep it up this is great
02/05/2024 @jonaw.2153: Dude, I think you need to make some crucifixes and exorcise the place. Whatever that weird entity is, it's unholy. And now that you've got a portal to hell, who knows what you'll encounter.
P.S.: Steel shields against ghosts.
02/05/2024 @land3021: 1:51 This a different static-monster breed? The other one kinda looked different...
2:59 They must be killable...
3:33 Possessed sheep eh? I feel like I encountered one of those on pocket edition at one stage.
4:59 18 XP return from dying? That's a decent return, it's usually always just 7 XP on Java.
8:03 Yeah fr
14:53 Strange...
10/05/2024 @volchonokilliR: In case you are wondering where episode 6 is, or having trouble finding it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1hykR199fo
it was reuploaded
02/05/2024 @boopuchannel: finally something weird bro best episode
02/05/2024 @Aranthappyrobot: That does make me wonder if you could start with the nether disc to begin with?
02/05/2024 @xKazIsKoolx: Only if you were already in the slip when you last saved the game
02/05/2024 @retrosonichero7995: Hello, my name is Connor. I've been watching your video series relatively closely. First off, I want to give you my thanks on your excellent archival efforts. Other than that, I'd like to get straight down to business.
My father was involved in the development for this version of the game. The team was divided between two different branches, the American branch (Microsoft), and the Swedish branch (Mojang Specifications). While this may seem odd given the fact that Mojang was a small studio at that time, the original plan was for Microsoft to take the role as publisher. They saw that the game had potential, and wanted to help "get it out there", with the understanding being they would get a decent amount of say in its development and make the final call whenever there were internal disagreements.
In any event, my dad was on the American branch. He was part of the quality assurance team, and would report any bugs or anomalies that he believed were unintended by the developers. You made a video about one house world suddenly appearing, and I specifically remember my dad telling me a story about that many years ago. He was actually the first person to witness the anomaly occur, and actually recognized the house depicted in the world, but couldn't quite pinpoint where it came from or what its significance was. At this point in time, the game was very late in development. I'd presume it was made on the same build you're playing on.
That's the main thing I wanted to address. The reason why none of us have heard of this version is simply because it wasn't ever officially released. It got very close, to the point of being rated by the ESRB and having almost finalized jewel case and disc artwork. The only real difference I can recall is that the enchantment table text you see on the back of your jewel case is a placeholder, and was planned on containing vivid, cryptic descriptions about the game and what it contained, in English.
In other words, the game you've been playing is a prototype. Based off of the footage, I can surmise it was at about 95% completion if I go off of the development roadmap from my foggy memory. There is no definitive answer as to why it was canceled, and it's certainly puzzling if we take it at face value. The game, without question, would have been absolutely revolutionary for its time. The official release of what we know today as "Minecraft" clearly proves that even all these years later, there is a market for this game. And there definitely was back then, too.
What I do know is that there were disagreements within the ESRB as to how the game should be rated. It was a rare instance where several different people were tasked to rate the game, because everyone was experiencing different things. Some had a fairly calm experience with it, while others had an experience that could only be described as "borderline survival-horror". These people pushed the game to be marketed as "T". While others were perfectly content with keeping it as "E". As we all know, "E" was the final rating given, despite the fact that you could pretty easily make the argument that an Everyone rating isn't adequate; given the suspenseful content.
As for the reason why it's subtitled "PlayStation Edition" instead of simply titled "Minecraft", apparently a Windows 98 release was also planned for PC. I have no idea how far development got on it. However, to my understanding, the developers ran into a plethora of technical problems when working with PC hardware. Problems that were simply a non issue with the PS1's hardware, despite the fact that the most powerful computers of the time easily outclassed it. At this point in time, two versions were being developed in parallel: one for Windows, and one for PlayStation. The PC version got the boot first. It is currently unknown if any prototype copies of it are still in existence, as I've never heard of one surfacing. I'm still blown away by the fact that we have a playable PS1 prototype. That alone is simply incredible.
Anyways, I believe that's all I have to say on this matter. If you or anyone else in this comment section has any questions for me, I'd be more than happy to answer them. I have some further potential insight on the house world you've discovered, but I've left it out of this comment due to fear of it simply getting too long-winded.
02/05/2024 @wwnter: this is awesome sauce
02/05/2024 @rbxx: Love this so much
02/05/2024 @gardrek: did anybody else notice the weird face monster in the upper-left corner at 12:03?
02/05/2024 @xKazIsKoolx: It's a glare
02/05/2024 @Metal7546: Yay just got up to watch this
02/05/2024 @rocky_roadster: There's a pair of glowing eyes at 10:30
02/05/2024 @spacehunternebulanm7003: you should probably try mining higher up for more results
02/05/2024 @shibainu2528: Something that I should say, on the ROM that I have, I encountered the unvoted "Mob C" creature (The little crocodile-like creature)
Doesn't seem to drop anything, and hits like a truck if you anger it. But I don't know what it does or if the tutorial world would be of any help figuring out their mystery. Can't count on prior Minecraft knowledge because guess what? We've got the Phantom instead! and I already know how that works pretty well.
02/05/2024 @Xhepyxopila: I want to play this mod pack so bad but for some reason despite being themed around a console that uses a CONTROLLER, the pack does not have controller support
02/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: it does
02/05/2024 @Xhepyxopila: @MCPSXARCHIVE yeah turns out I got the wrong pack
But now I have an entirely different issue, the game keeps automatically going into full screen and ruining the resolution of the window despite me setting it to the proper settings
03/05/2024 @Atif_al_Abdul_Rahman: i think that Entity might be Enderman But the texture might not make it what it should have been. I mean it was moving like enderman.
02/05/2024 @eclibert17nordus84: I been loving this serie so far! Im so intrigued about those ghost like entities, do they have a name? Maybe they just appear when you hear the voices, but im wondering what would be the cause of this.
02/05/2024 @zacharymcmorrow5684: they have a noise when they appear, but they seem to just spawn relatively rarely
02/05/2024 @chipklip2: hello, my friend has this game, he calls them midnight lurkers

02/05/2024 @eclibert17nordus84: @chipklip2 Thank you! Glad to know that these guys have a name because im really interested in their concept.
02/05/2024 @chipklip2: @eclibert17nordus84 okay also I'm sorry I don't know why my comment sent like 20 times
02/05/2024 @ninjamaster455: does anyone know how to fix the optifine thing bc i downloaded it but it doesn’t work still i need help
02/05/2024 @-Hyxel-: the weird whispers in the backround were a bit overused
weird how mojang made this version of the game so annoying
02/05/2024 @laslosermcuseless1574: Does creative mode exist on psx? I'm starting to wonder if there's anything different with the other game modes considering how this version of the game works off a different design philosophy
02/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: There is but I don’t plan on exploring it as of right now
02/05/2024 @lolment27: Noway all this real?
02/05/2024 @Elquenoseconectacasinunca: This is a mod right? (Please ignore the arg part)
02/05/2024 @mr.pigeon0: the reason im guessing on why they made a new version of the game “java” is because of the monsters!!!!
04/05/2024 @rodentrider2: 1:43 how did u animate this in minecraft mod
02/05/2024 @man8814: Do you know the scape and run mod?

02/05/2024 @neonotterpop2528: hey, idk if you know anything about it or not, but does "herobrine" spawn in the tutorial worlds or no? so far i haven't seen him in mine.
02/05/2024 @resistantlucario6910: He does, can confirm. Got a few screenshots of him in my instance of it.
02/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: No idea, my tutorial was replaced with a corrupt file, I never got to try it
02/05/2024 @lovecrisis619: 1 min ago man im eating good tonight
