"Minecraft Playstation Edition" is a game developed by Mojang Studios in the Year 1998 in a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the Playstation Console released in 1994, this game was a pre-cursor to the classic 'Minecraft' of 2009, although not many people are aware of it due to it being pulled from store shelves just a year after release with only a 1000 or so copies ever being sold, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a copy at a retro game store about a month ago, here's my experience with the title.
If you'd like to play the game yourself via emulation here's a link to a rom to download as finding a physical copy like myself is nearly impossible to do: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...
Thanks to xKazIsKooIx for ripping the game files to allow others to play the game
Any help to learn more about the game would be appreciated as I'm still learning about it myself and plan to continue my exploration into the title more on this channel

02/05/2024 @nathannightmare1604: I can't believe Mojang would reuse the same trailer.
02/05/2024 @masahirosakurai64: It was a callback for fans of the original ps1 version
03/05/2024 @ClingToFilm: @masahirosakurai64 my brother said that when the pc version's trailer came out it took him back to when he was a kid. Now I can see why
08/05/2024 @MrWhatsItsName: This is legit what every game journalist thought the minecraft graphics looked like back in 2011
09/05/2024 @lynnbarney4582: But even more retro
02/05/2024 @OfficialTormentProductions: oh dude sick! i remember growing up with this game as a little kid, my dad had a PlayStation and apparently is a huge fan of this game, he even watched this commercial when it came out way back when! when i showed it to him, he said a huge wave of nostalgia came over him. Thank you for finding this and showing it to the world once more!
03/05/2024 @CombustibleLemon77: yeah, this game was super nostalgic! i remember playing this and Petscop back in the day, those were so fun...
03/05/2024 @zilla2004: Wow, that's crazy! I played this game for the first time during the late 2000s, thought it was a weird game, but I still liked every aspect of it. My father bought it from a friend that lived in the US at the time. He used to play all kinds of games so he also gave it to me eventually, haha! Like it really much, only around 2017 I think, I startedto discover people saying it's not a real game or stuff like that. I know it might be an earlier version of the 2009 game, Minecraft (judging by its idea, theme, colors, characters, story, graphics, and creators, I find it similar to other editions) I really hope they will make a re-release or something!!
04/05/2024 @TTGSHII: Bro I was in heaven playing this bro the game is so nostalgic
02/05/2024 @nec0oo604: POV:you remember something but the bare minimum of it only
04/05/2024 @paleoberd: One of the coolest mods I've seen, love the arg feel to it, truly am living in an alternate universe here
02/05/2024 @clustabite7614: One interesting thing I’d like to note is the addition of the “PlayStation edition” part of the name, rather than it just being called ”Minecraft” implies that maybe there’s an even earlier version or it was maybe planned to be released on other consoles like Xbox and Nintendo 64? Maybe the other copies exist? If so maybe they could help to provide more information is discovered, slim chance though.
02/05/2024 @JoBot__: Well, the XBOX hadn't been released yet.
02/05/2024 @clustabite7614: @JoBot__ true.
02/05/2024 @thegmeister244: im pretty sure i recall there being a sega saturn version as well. ran like absolute shit, and you needed the 3d control pad to play it as well.
02/05/2024 @thegmeister244: @JoBot__ yeah. its probably even rarer since it barely sold any copies.
02/05/2024 @ShiroCh_ID: @thegmeister244 wich there could be a planned relases for dreamcast but may be scraped due to that console astronomical failure
02/05/2024 @sonickidd127: i think i might remember... in the corner of the basement in my parents old house, there was like... a floppy disk that had tape saying "minecraft 1996" on it... i remember there also being an old computer in the basement, it was plugged in and everything. my parents always told me to "never touch it" and uh... one day, when i was trusted to be home alone, i snuck into the basement and turned it on. needless to say, i found out why they told me not to touch it... years later i asked them about it and they never remembered anything. im gonna go break in that abandoned hunk of junk and see if i can go get it... with me luck, ill probably need it. (edit: i accidentally put in 4 instead of 6 so i had to change it... still planning on breaking in that place though.)
02/05/2024 @balixgaming4215: @thegmeister244 I got the sega Saturn version for Christmas in 1998 also your kinda right about the lag it ran at 15 fps for me.
08/05/2024 @foxboiii96: @balixgaming4215 Please video
09/05/2024 @gameenjoyer99: Amazing trailer, takes the original PlayStation's retro feel to another level 🎮
01/05/2024 @spaceyacey7062: I wonder if there were any other Minecraft versions released for the fifth generation of consoles? Why else would it be marketed as "Playstation Edition" unless there were other versions?
01/05/2024 @cjaawesome616: I think there were plans for a n64 version but due to the small cartridge size and control issues it fell through. And the Saturn did not have the 3d capabilities. As for PC there could be some lost version we don't know about.
01/05/2024 @s0n1cd3v: Maybe there was a Dreamcast version or N64 version respectively, and we just either found only the PSX version or the other versions besides this one got canned at some point, both are a possibility.
01/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: @cjaawesome616 I feel like with the game having a heavy focus on cursor based UI it’s likely there was a pc version at some point, but If that is the case it’s been lost to time
01/05/2024 @s0n1cd3v: @MCPSXARCHIVE it is very much a possibility as the game clearly states “PlayStation Version” so there must either have been other versions or plans to develop them. I really think besides a PC port we haven’t found, there might be also a Dreamcast Version, having in mind the Dreamcast Released on 1998 as well and knowing the fact it could run a version of early Windows on itself, so maybe we don’t only have a lost PC port, but a Dreamcast Port of said PC port, it would only make sense, after all, why not release also a version for the latest / more powerful console of the time as well? But who knows, we can only speculate at this point, we might even never know for that matter. But what is sure is that something happened with this / these versions that made mojang cover it all up and entirely rebuild the game later on as a completely new project on PC, maybe even with a different development team altogether. I’m curious to find more about this version, I think we are still missing some more info.
02/05/2024 @ShiroCh_ID: @MCPSXARCHIVE wait, doesnt mojang themselves already say that they somehow found the oldest copy of minecraft pc? i think that one has the graphics similar to doom, wich then implies there was actually another obsecure console version and could potencially push 16 bit computer limit
02/05/2024 @alexmart9963: @ShiroCh_ID Yeah, and it was also released in 1994, but it wasn't that impressive due to the PCs of that era being pretty power-poor. Also, the PC version were pretty hard to get because PC were not a big market as now
02/05/2024 @sonickidd127: @ShiroCh_ID yeah, i actually have their published version of it... its called the "3D SHAREWARE" version nowadays... i think you can even find it on the wiki
02/05/2024 @GroupNebula563: as a pop station collector the three seconds of the pop station ad at the end fucking sent me
02/05/2024 @machtalaterrouge: Did someone noticed the reversed audio at the end of the trailer? It was faint but it can be heard
I don't know what it said but I think it can be interesting to decypher it.
02/05/2024 @A_cool_man: I made out “help me someone please
02/05/2024 @mike8930: @A_cool_man same
05/05/2024 @SMP64-MP: Me too! i kind of expected some weird thing in this trailer.
01/05/2024 @cjaawesome616: How did you find this I thought it was lost media?
01/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: I was recently sent a bunch of old vhs recordings from an anonymous source, this was included
02/05/2024 @galacticknight55544: It's fake. Minecraft came out in 2009.
02/05/2024 @Cheerful__1: @galacticknight55544 this is supposed to be a arg or something i think. everyone knows it’s fake though
02/05/2024 @krispwaffle: @Cheerful__1 It’s a creepy pasta but I believe this channel is turning into an ARG. Hope this gains traction so we can potentially have a community try to solve it if that’s the case.
02/05/2024 @gaminganimators7000: @galacticknight55544 no it's not, this is clearly real
02/05/2024 @imgon714: it’s fake there’s no way mines craft had that much features
02/05/2024 @ShiroCh_ID: @starberry_bliss what is arg?
also i cant wait this channel became a mandala effect
02/05/2024 @Shojiki64: @galacticknight55544 no it came out on the sega genesis
02/05/2024 @FUNKY_HENRY: It isn't a creepypasta. The first Minecraft was supposed to come out in 1998 but Mojang hidden this for the public @krispwaffle
02/05/2024 @Eggooo: @FUNKY_HENRY it’s fake why would a 1998 version of Minecraft be more updated then the Xbox one edition or ps4 edition
02/05/2024 @NapcanOG: @Eggooo money reasons like destiny 2 releasing base cut-back content as paid dlc
03/05/2024 @Anatoli-j2e: Bro Is bullshiting his ass out with this
03/05/2024 @bamboozler4198: @galacticknight55544 this is a story.
04/05/2024 @julianaxe2007: @galacticknight55544 Such a party pooper.
04/05/2024 @dinoco3672: @galacticknight55544 Minecraft Java edition was first tested in 2009. This is the PS1 version, it's much older.
05/05/2024 @BasicType: @galacticknight55544 😂
04/05/2024 @_calyxia: I saw this once on TV! I thought I was dreaming or something, everyone kept telling me I was crazy
02/05/2024 @Addsomehappy: I guess it didn't catch on in 1998 because of the graphics, it wasn't realism oriented like Half-life, or cutesy enough like the Japanese games, this trailer also only shows off a few buildings, potential buyers might not have seen the creative potential of this game, what a shame...
02/05/2024 @haijehiemstra2883: I definetly remember a bit off this.
Was playtester at the time, Seemingly there were some internal issues i cant remember.
They were talking about other ports, And i was a playtester for the game, i was around 15/16 at the time? My dad worked there during the fiasco that happened there, Seemingly something went wrong... My dad doesnt want to talk about it these days, He did back then, But ive totally forgotten, This game completely was gone from my memory by the time 2011 came around, Which was when i picked up the game with some college friends, I kept feeling... off when playing, Allmost like a echo off something, and now, Its kind off half coming back, But most is still completely unfamiliar and even forgotten, Mainly around 2014 i kept feeling like i had forgotten something, I still dont know the full picture to this day. Oh yeah, That whole fiasco. Simply i dont know that much off it, Its completely gone from my mind, Only that a fiasco happened, Wait... I think it was that some orginization told mojang to shut it down, This was after a small release in some minor places, Mainly limburg. They had to shutdown in 06? This is all still foggy so be a little patient here, I heard around the time that Notch bought the game name and title, I dont remember who the original owner off mojang was. But alas, Thats all i know for now.
10/05/2024 @BasementDweller_: What a rabbit hole I have entered.
02/05/2024 @laggianput: I feel like the playstation would be severyly struggling to run the game
02/05/2024 @arciks11: There had been a PS1 tech demo made that was very barebones, and yeah performance was certainly a thing.
02/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: I mean the game is capped out 20 frames lol
04/05/2024 @RealRoboKnight: Yeah, PS1 games are usually capped at 60fps lol @MCPSXARCHIVE
11/03/2024 @B3anbutgreen: I remember playing this, there was creepy stuff going on.
09/05/2024 @KefkeWren: Man, this trailer really didn't see a lot of play on T.V.! Probably why so many people don't remember it.
02/05/2024 @Notan0001: The narrator's voice kind of sounds like Zamasu
07/05/2024 @Zillycay_: Oh, this game. I remember Christmas 1998, I begged my parents religiously for this game again and again, until they had enough and gave in.
09/05/2024 @Cottonthefox: did you hear about the cancelled original xbox version? i found a copy and play it everyday, i can tell you. its alot more haunted then the ps1 version, cool that eventually they remade minecraft for pc, xbox 360 and ps3 though!
03/05/2024 @Elias-brawl-stars.: Times fly..😔
09/05/2024 @SKIT..CENTRAL: There needs to be a co-op mode I wanna be able to play with others so we can get scared together
06/05/2024 @PixelsDrones: While a horror game it can be just as much of a nostalgic game
04/05/2024 @Fav56928: We should gonna made N64 but PS1 is awesome idea it’s like what if Minecraft was released on 1998 it could be the best game on ps1 and ik it’s just a mod not homebrew or other👍
06/05/2024 @shyannelarrabee8259: Going off track for a minute yes it's a mod I play the mod all the time I like the mod ok back on track
07/05/2024 @Penny-vj1gc: I love the "lost media" vibes
05/05/2024 @imgvillasrc1608: Memes and creepypasta aside, makes you wonder what if Minecraft really was released (the beta 1.7.3 version at least) in 1998? This is also assuming that minecraft is more PC-centered and gets updated regularly like our timeline.
What would be the cultural impact of a minecraft that was released a decade earlier? What would Minecraft be like now with an eleven year head start?
02/05/2024 @TheFizzlet: I like where this is going
03/05/2024 @lpcurse3042: You know, I actually got a physical copy from a garage sale. A note was attached to it saying "do not play", like that will stop me. I like playing abandonware games, so I might boot up the ol' PS1 and see what's in store.
09/05/2024 @star_shaun: Narrated by Ringo Starr
09/05/2024 @CooISkeleton96: Differences between this and the modern trailer for PC:
Narrator’s voice is a lot less echoey
Music is different
Graphics are of course better in the modern trailer
Camera angles are a lot more different
The mountain Steve climbed is significantly smaller in the PSX trailer
The cave in the PSX trailer has drip stone unlike the modern one
The majestic castle is a lot smaller in the PSX trailer
The redstone contraption seems to be deeper underground than the one in the modern version
The landscape is entirely different around the roller coaster, too many differences to count.
The “play with friends” part in the PSX trailer is of course showing off the split screen, while the one in the original trailer is in 3rd person
The final pan at the end lasts a lot longer along with the logo
Really confused on why mojang decided to reuse a lot of the same shots slightly altered in their modern trailer, possibly as a callback to this version while still being different enough? It’s hard to say.
02/05/2024 @Neurotoxin_Detected: It seems the audio at the end is just the commentary reversed, slowed and pitched down.
03/05/2024 @Henryweaponsdude: Why is ringo Starr narrating a Minecraft commercial
02/05/2024 @who1986: Oh! I remember this trailer in 1998 when i was in McDonald's in Kyiv. It was played around with the MCD promo. I was so interested but i don't had the PS1 at that moment :(
03/05/2024 @jarellsmithyt99: Sometimes I think Minecraft is a 90's games
09/05/2024 @LilUltraKataru: This is literally the pc trailer with the PlayStation logo slapped on 😭
10/05/2024 @lynnbarney4582: What there more like a commercial at the start In this has vhs look in retro lookin
03/05/2024 @AlexSzubka: this is so cool, but one thing that slightly bothers me is the use of the newer textures and content. i really wish they tried replicating beta minecraft
08/05/2024 @elfb2722: I know is an edit but since when the "playstation" sound was started to be used
07/05/2024 @randomcoloradan2878: I love alternate history media
03/05/2024 @ClingToFilm: Dude this is ancient, there were only 1000 copies!
04/05/2024 @markjorencvelasco3255: didn't know it was released in 1998
04/05/2024 @guavamax420: MINECRAFT PLAYSTATION EDITION E3 1998 PRESENTATION
STATUS: LOST
NOTES: Someone told me that an E3 presentation of this lost Minecraft version exists, but that's up for speculation.
02/05/2024 @themaniacgames529: how to make this vhs filter?
02/05/2024 @Real_Exile: i wonder what that audio is a t the end of the tape
02/05/2024 @Psycho_Nemesis: woagh this is crazy who made the music for this
02/05/2024 @ElectricoGamez: Wait a minute, if there's a Playstation 1 Edition of Minecraft, there HAS to be a Playstation 2 Edition somewhere as well, right?
02/05/2024 @MCPSXARCHIVE: as far as I know the ps1 title was pulled from shelves and covered up so no, I don't believe so
02/05/2024 @ElectricoGamez: I have seen and heard rumors of a Minecraft trailer from 2001. Odd since by that time, the PSX version of Minecraft had already been taken off the shelves.
03/05/2024 @ClingToFilm: @ElectricoGamez my uncle worked for Mojang in the very early days, he said that this version had to be redacted due to issues with world generation and rogue entities. I'll ask him if was ever a ps2 title
09/05/2024 @Cottonthefox: @ClingToFilm i have my hands on an original xbox version, you know, before they remade the whole game for pc, xbox 360 and ps3, does he know anything about that
09/05/2024 @Questprob3: The only limit is your imagination.
07/05/2024 @РусланИщук-щ8в: Minecraft on Windows 95/98
02/05/2024 @piniokwilku2282: this voice reminds me of thomas the tank engine
