In the song the singer is talking to his crush and in the middle of his flirting he realises his own mortality, that god could at any moment "remove his ladder" (aka kill him) and end his life before he did the many things he wanted on his life.

11/15/2024 @GunterXyax: @peeranutpompim3276 My first reading of this song is Tom realising that the girl he's met is going to inspire him to change (for the better), but a part of him is still attached to his self-destructive cycles of busy-ness. Hence how the first verse talks about how sad he is and how he is the one that put the sim in the pool and removed the ladder. And the second verse mentions he bought himself a scuba pack, showing he's comfortable and safe to stay in the ladder-less pool for a while. So it seems to me that the girl is possibly going to add a ladder to the pool, 'rescuing' Tom, but Tom isn't ready to accept that. That's just my interpretation though, and there's a lot of my own self-reflection mixed in there! This quickly became one of my favourite songs
