If it isn't christianity, then billions would suffer. If it were a smaller religion, even more would suffer. If it was an obscure, dead religion, then everyone would. I would always think "what about all the people who never even have the chance to know about Catholicism? They all just go to hell?" And then you think about the old mission trips, giant religious groups trying to save people from hell. It's sad because it's a massive cash grab for many, but a lot of religious people have good intentions and just want to improve their life. It gives people the idea that there is one greater being that will always be there for them no matter what, which can be really therapeutic. But at the same time there's a bunch of negativity like you'll be in hell for eternity if you mess up. Honestly a lot of the threats of religion seem like a way of pressuring and making money through scaring people. There are definitely a lot of people who benefit from religion, but it's impossible to know which religion is "right" because like you said, it's a massive gamble. What are the odds that the religion you're brought up practicing is the "right" one. That's why I feel like it's better overall to be a spiritual person without practicing a direct religion. Do things the right way because you want to do right by others, not because you'll be smited and damned to hell if you do bad things. And if God damns me to hell for that, then I guess I was damned from the start. But who knows.
