I think, but this is quite a stretch, that smiley used the same "call of the well" tormenting on his bullies, that he did on Chris. And since bullies tend to not have real friends, they couldn't pull themselves out, and gave into smiley. Whether or not they died in the same well is beyond me, but considering they can jump across from smiley's world into Chris's, it is a possibility.
The bullies made that kid who he is, and so they are a part of him. Pieces of the smile.
