You can convert any Minecraft world regardless of version (except the early RD versions from 2009)
Just create a world in alpha, walk around for a bit to generate chunks. Then launch it again in beta 1.7, then 1.12.2. Or use an ancient version of MCedit (idk if the latest release supports alpha levels)
There's also plenty of mods that bring back old world generation too.
