11/06/2019 @ddau6255: 1966, 12 years old, I was still in the rice paddies of Vietnam. First time hearing this song, not understanding a word of it, I said “Whoa!” (In Vietnamese of course!). Now, after all these years, when hearing this song and understanding every word of it, I still say “whoa”!
11/06/2019 @crispybagpipes1548: awesome :)
11/06/2019 @leslielearnorth: THAT my friend, is an EXCELLENT use of the comment section. Great story!
11/06/2019 @lordgarmadon2598: so you lived in Vietnam during the war. Dr Dau, i do not understand.
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Lord Garmadon259
Yes Sir: I was exposed to the 60’s music at a young age by the American military FM radio system. You probably saw “Good Morning VN” by the late R Williams. These local FM radio stations played all the latest rock and roll bands at the time to entertain the American military personnel.
In that sense, the British did not only invade America, but also Vietnam!
Not understanding a word of English, somehow, I just loved that music! I got yelled by my dad for listening to all “that noise”. At night, I went to bed in my mosquito-netted bed with my FM radio and plugged in my earphones so that my dad couldn’t hear.
I remembered 1 song that was so different by The Thee Dogs Night “Mama told me not come”: “Hey, nice guitar rift and a lot of talking!” That was a first for me.
So, to make the story short, I was in the middle of the golden era of Rock and Roll. If I had the mean, I would have been in a rock band!

11/06/2019 @capismama2922: I had a friend (when I lived in Georgia, USA) that was born and raised in Viet Nam (until age 13, that is) and he knew American/British pop music, just like you said.
Having said that...how do I upvote your comment a couple hundred more times....?

11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Pine Cone
Pine: FYI, I left at the 25th hour, ~9.00 am 4/30/1975 after the last heli departed the US Embassy roof top from the bank of the river. Writing this story for my kids, in the 3rd chapter!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Steven Lee
Ha ha! I read your comment LOL
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: DIRT e D33DS
I am proud and thankful to call this country mine! Always thankful for the sacrifice and precious lives lost in VN. What an ultimate sacrifice! Unfortunately, their sacrifice only brought freedom to more than a million Vietnamese. The rest live under one-party system (a contorted communist system no less) which is really corrupted.
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Rudolph Guarnacci
Of course!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Dead Memes
Actually, my escape and the escapes of thousands of boat people would make a lot of people shit in their pants.
But that’s another story
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Dirt, If you are a Vietnam Vet, I bow my head in front of you with due respect and thanks

11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Harry Todd
Thanks Harry, the intent was none other than showing how the Beatles enter my little space. To me, looking back, it was kind of amazing that I got to discover them!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Jah Snoke
Jag, it was all true!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Han reality.
Thanks Han, your logic is spot on! Kids yes, grandkids, not yet!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: world of weirdness
WOW, it’s easy and understandable for him to feel that way. How would you react to possibly have to go defending a country that is not your own and possibly make the ultimate sacrifice.
I always have a lot of respect for the US military in that sense: answering the call, regardless of the decision made by people that have never been on a battlefield!
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Dennis The Menace
Dennis, confirming: this is not full of crap Lol
11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Capismama

11/06/2019 @ddau6255: Kimberly M

11/06/2020 @darthrevan454: @ddau6255 whoa you had earphones back then? Were they just huge?
11/06/2020 @darthrevan454: @capismama2922 There's a joke somewhere there that you're missing buddy.
11/06/2020 @darthrevan454: @jacket0519 don't worry bro I saw your joke lol
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: Darth Revan actually Darth, I don’t know where they came from. We didn’t call them earphones, we called them ´écouteurs’, French word for earphones. They were actually small earphones, but crude, quality not so great, mono! Not stereo !
11/06/2020 @darthrevan454: @ddau6255 I did not know that and I'm from the US born in 2000 so I'm just child compared to you. It's awesome to know people from all over heard their music.
11/06/2020 @TopWitchRus: EdDoesNASCAR i had no doubt that your comment wasn't much deep.
well, you could find someplace else for it, and, know you don't care, but it probably could be less upseting. And maybe it would be even a little funny. Problem is context
11/06/2020 @kjell159: I don't even understand the meaning of these words.
Is it about tripping on psychedelics, is she taking a short road trip because they sing about 'Sunday driver yeah'?
11/06/2020 @heathcliff8624: After all these years there will be a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Hanoi. Things sure can change.
11/06/2020 @captainroger: Under heavy machine gun fire. Praying for your country
11/06/2020 @unitedstatesofamerica183: That’s a madlad there
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: mark mcallan Thks Mark, I did bring my bro and sis’s family over via the legal immigration system: had to wait for 12 years after the paperwork was filed. They have become US citizens, working every single day and dutifully pay their taxes! Unlike what u have heard, immigration, if done right, is a foundation of this country: not to gloat, in my family, my sis and bro, there are 4 engineers (with one graduated from Yale) one dentist, one nurse, one social worker, one school admin..., one chicken farmer..the points I am making: 1) it’s a great country, 2) immigration (legal) is a renewal to the country, go look at the history
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: Julio Diaz Thks Julio, as a matter of fact, at the request of my kids, I am writing a story, at the 3rd chapter so far. Watch out Hollywood, here I come😀
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: E Zach Lee Wright, Hi E: they were mono, no stereo, didn’t do justice to the recording! but they help me not getting yelled at for listening to the crazy noise (rock n roll 😀)
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: EdDoesNASCAR now you guys, let’s not start World War 3 just because a little man loved a song 😃
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: I DON'T CARE I DON'T CARE Yep, Thks for your comment, just think about those that didn’t, my compatriots, high school friends and others that didn’t. Have you ever been at the Vietnam memorial in DC? It’s sobering standing there in front of all those names. They were husbands, brothers, fathers...I always said a prayer for them and their family when I stood there, in front of all those names, a spiritual experience!
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: Heath Cliff Ah! that and, more than anything, a democratic form of government and the vanquish of the communist dictatorship! It would make the ultimate sacrifice of more than 55 k of precious Americans and countless Vietnamese’s lives worthwhile. Just wish Vietnam reaches the level of democratic ladder built by Taiwan, would be nice!
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: captainroger if u were a Vietnam vet, I bow my head Sir! Now I pray that the dictatorship crumbles!
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: Vsauce Michael Vsauce, haven’t heard someone calling me that, cool, must be from across the Pond?
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: kjell159 Kjell159, that’s their genius, a concoction of words to make you and me wonder and wander!!
11/06/2020 @IanSparta: I'm sorry... There's no excuse for the century of colonialism endured by your nation. I'm truly sorry for the hell you've been put through.
11/06/2020 @nathaniellomas2534: yep same
11/06/2020 @kirkbupkis: @ddau6255 I love that you took the time to respond to every reply to your comment! You must have thousands of stories from that era!! What an experience, I'm sure not always a very pleasant one, but still astounding regardless, I tip my hat to you, sir.
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: TopWitchRus
Alright! Alright! Let’s not start WW 3 on this! LOL
11/06/2020 @ddau6255: Kirk Bupkis
Kirk: I feel “funny” being addressed as “Sir”. Last time I checked, the Queen has not Knighted me (not yet! Hah hah!)
Anyway, a small story here for you.
The way we discovered new music coming out.
My friend and I used to go to the music store to check out new songs coming out. As teenager, I had no money and no record player (hope you know what it is). My friend had one. With some of his spending money to buy a record, “we” had to be spot on when buying one. That money was hard to come by.
The salesman (usually the owner) would support the record player handle with the needle at the end on his index finger and run it across the record on each song for a 3-5 seconds ( a 33 LP had multi songs, a 45 had a single song on it).
So, for each record, we could really listen to a few seconds of a song intro to decide whether we liked the record. That was how we discovered a lot of new bands without understanding what they were singing!
In the short period of a few seconds allowed, the intro to a song, to us, became the most critical criterion in our little world and choice. But, I think that this still holds true: go listen to the intro of Stairway to Heaven, Angie or Bohemian Rhapsody...
And my friend, that’s how we learnt to listen to R&R.
11/06/2020 @kirkbupkis: @ddau6255 Thank you for sharing that! That's so cool, I couldn't imagine hearing only the first few bars of a song and having to base your entire opinion of the song or artist on that alone! I definitely prefer the current era of music accessibility, but it sure doesn't compare to the feeling of listening to a new record for the first time!
11/06/2020 @TheTa43: @ddau6255 im glad ur alive to tell us !!
