06/02/2025 @paperpenn9923: Ive been wondering whent this would finally come out and as usual it was well worth the wait. So much thought went into this episode and theres just so many layers and so much nuance here. Everytime i feel we're gonna get some answers, it seems we just more questions, but honestly? I dont mind that. This all seems to be building up towards something huge and the episode title gives that feeling more verity. Andrew was so impuslive, aggressive, and exhausted in this episode. Seeing him go from being tired and annoyed to genuinely afraid to a mix of all three made for a brilliant watch. I had a feeling when he broke the door there would be a sign saying he shouldn't have done that, but regardless there is something so disturbing about the implications. What i didnt see coming was the note leaks scattered in the maze, which were extremely creepy and made me feel deeply unsettled and honestly afraid for Andrew. This has gotten all too real for him and if his outside life is being drawn into this, he really has no escape. The biggest fear ive got is his repeated defeated attitude and when he said he "cant take this anymore", it really feels like the call of the well is coming for him. With him being so panicked in real life, feeling dizzy and having trouble breathing, not eating, not being able to calm down, and breaking down again at the end of this, it feels very symbolic that he is the canary in the coalmines, losing his breath to the anxiety that this is bringing him. When he "dies" to the warden but is spared by the totem, it feels like it was the warning that a part of him died to the fear in that moment. His anguished screams afterwards were genuinely chilling and left me disturbed, almost like i shouldnt be watching this, much less enjoying it as much as I have. There is so much lore at this point that I think i should rewtch the entire series to get a grasp on everytging, especially all the unanswered questions. The bones are the main quest, but theres so many places hes been, lore left untied, why he cant speak in the towers, what Chris was building, how Andrew lost his memory of the first act, all the things hes gotten, all the books hes read... the one thing thst clocked the most confusing to this was the final book in this one, outlining the entire maze experience... if those were his notes, was this someone bringing his maze to life? If so, why? To torment him? Did Andrew somehow create part of this? I guess theres no way of knowing yet, only theories to be made. Its a beautiful and harrowing series and this was a particularly painful watch. Easily one of the best episodes. And the song at the end- DAMN. That was 🔥. Amazing job, you have such a spectacular voice Andrew (actually, reading these comments I've learned ur name is Owen, so I'll have to stop calling u Andrew LOL). I absolutely LOVE this series and its something truly unrivaled in its form. Congratulations and I cannot wait to see whats next to come ❤❤❤
06/01/2025 @terraristit3752: That was an...INTERESTING episode, to say the least. It was really intense, but also really...weird, I guess? Felt like we got almost no answers, just a lot more questions. What were Andrew's personal note files doing in Chris' mine? And what was leaking that deadly gas in the mine, which I'm assuming was represented by the sculk blocks? In case anyone doesn't know, I learnt from Owen (the real name of the person who makes this series, Andrew is just the fictional character's name) in this video's premiere chat that canaries were actually used in real world mines to check for poisonous gases...by keeping it in the mine so that it breathes the gases in before the miners do and fucking DIES, so when it stops singing, that's a sign for the miners to get out. The thing I'm confused about is...what was the canary in this video? I didn’t really notice that anything would have "stopped singing," so to speak. What was the thing that warned Andrew of danger? The armor stands with creeper heads, maybe, but how? I don't really understand what their purpose was, other than to psychologically torture Andrew, of course (he now associates Chris with him wearing a creeper head). Unless it means that Smiley has taken Chris captive and is using him as the canary, but there was nothing that would have directly implied that, at least in my opinion. Maybe the canary was the Piece of the Smile, somehow? Like, after Andrew killed it, he immediately wandered into the danger zone, just like how the canary's death in real life was a sign that the mine was poisoned, but I don't see how those two events were directly correlated? It just feels a bit ambiguous. Maybe I just missed it: I'll have to rewatch the episode again when I get the time.
And speaking of Andrew in the danger zone, the implication that his physical body CAN be affected when playing on this haunted Minecraft world is REALLY interesting lore, in my opinion! Notice how Andrew almost immediately said he started to feel weird and that it was getting hard to breathe when he entered the sculk zone, implying that his rea life body was actually breathing in toxic gases that can sometimes be found in mines. I think that adds a lot of credibility to the popular community theory that he's actively drowning in real life while exploring the Land of Towers.
And speaking of the Land of Towers, specifically the Labyrinth, it’s interesting to me that in the Labyrinth, he had to find an eye of ender and put it on an item frame, whereas here, he had to find an ender pearl and put it on an item frame. Very similar concepts, I'm very curious about what that implies. That was by far one of the most interesting things about this episode to me.
One thing that I found a bit disappointing, however, was the totem of undying: I was expecting it to be used when Andrew would finally succumb to the Call of the Well, which would essentially be Chris saving him (he got the totem from Chris all the way back in Act 3, "Winter Wonderland," after all), so to me, personally, it felt a bit anticlimactic to use the totem on a normal Minecraft enemy completely unrelated to Smiley. Not trying to be rude here, just giving constructive criticism. The only reason I can see the totem being used this way is maybe to symbolically represent Andrew rejecting Chris' help, considering Andrew essentially betrayed Chris in the last episode? That's the only explanation that makes sense to me, because Andrew definitely IS losing himself here: constantly breaking the map (something he never did before), killing the Pieces of the Smile in cold blood, and the thing I noticed most: ANDREW STOPPED CLOSING DOORS BEHIND HIM. That's a personality trait he's ALWAYS had since the beginning of Act 1, and now, he suddenly stopped doing it. I'm fairly certain that it represents him losing who he is, so I guess him losing Chris' gift (the totem) on a seemingly "meaningless" enemy also makes some sense, but still, in all honesty, it felt a bit anticlimactic. Again, not saying the episode was bad, just not one of my personal favorites.
However, all this constructive criticism, ambiguity and confusion can be thrown down a well (get it?) due to the GODDAMN FIRE ROCK SONG AT THE END, HOLY SHIT! Rock music and metal music are my favorite genres, so that was an AMAZING surprise! I didn’t think Owen’s voice could work that well on a rock song, and that GUITAR SOLO! Holy fucking shit. Amazing. Compare that to “There Might Be Hope” at the end of Winter Wonderland, and you can see how much his music and singing skills have improved. And not only that, but a rock song was also a REALLY fitting song for an episode where Andrew’s mental state was so intense from start to end. Absolutely amazing ending, more than made up for my mixed feelings about this episode…though I’m still a bit salty about that totem. Hopefully that’ll get some kind of explanation later in the series. Until then, can’t wait! And since the next video will be out some time next month, hopefully we won’t have to wait long.
06/01/2025 @yellowpig1026: from what i can tell, the entire sculk maze was some sort of punishment from smile. he got the sign saying "You shouldn't have done that" after he broke the door instead of doing the puzzle like he was meant to and then he was dropped into that area that did nothing to psychologically torment him. it seems to imply that the map was altered from him going refusing to play ball, and the result of that was the loss of the totem

Would actually make a lot of sense, too: specifically, it would explain how Andrew's notes got there, because Smiley definitely has access to his mind, and so, his memories. But then, if this was meant to be a punishment, why did Smiley leave in the note that helped Andrew escape? Maybe Smiley just decided that this just wasn't the correct time to go for the kill yet? Because he definitely is trying to kill Andrew, but maybe he still needs him alive for something, so he decided to just take the totem instead?

It has a very specific shape because of his mod packs, no? In an abstract way it could be shaped like a bird, at least to me with its outstretched arms! The moment his totem popped was the sign to get out before he died as the canary dying from the toxic fumes of the coal mine (or the warden, the guardian of the sulk aka toxins itself). Though Andrew himself being the canary is a good contender to me as well. I immediately noticed him not closing doors. Bringing up how he starts to break things wasn't something I considered, so good point! His aggression and impatience is growing + with all the mazes... it feels as if he is being led down a spiral he may not escape from.
06/01/2025 @zerotwo6814: We should really take a moment to think on how Andrew talked about his physical health. We have known for a while that whatever supernatural effect he, Chris, and Smiley have been affected by also includes physical symptoms. It is a progression that works alongside the psychological decline, like an ailment of the mind and body at once. He mentions having nightmares (as he brought up before), not eating properly, and frequently brought up feeling physically ill. The sort of whiney way he goes about it is realistic to someone who is feeling truly, and uncontrollably, ill and in distress. People get whiney because of how distressing it is, and in worse cases this is a precursor to a state of outright delirium. The further he goes, the worse his physical symptoms get. It is an agonizingly slow downward spiral.
However, we also know that simply leaving isn't an option for him. It's clear that the time between video uploads is canon to the narrative, but he keeps coming by because of the supernatural compulsion, the eldritch force whose nails are dragging along his mind, essentially haunting him while he is away. In a way comparable to a character in a Lovecraft story, he simply CANNOT just stop, as it becomes unbearable to do so...Yet staying is damnation.
He is really faced with choosing his suffering. It's as if outside he is starving, while inside he is slowly breaking down from radiation. Both ways lead to damnation, and no pain killer exists to numb it. We can only hope that he will be faced with a choice that can change his path.
06/01/2025 @LightReflects: I looked up the idiom on google and according to the cambridge dictionary, "Canary in a coal mine" not only means danger but it also means failure. I feel like maybe this episode isn't telling us that Andrew is in danger, which we already knew ever since you know he had his memory erased and all that, but that it's telling us that Andrew will just straight up die, he will not be able to stop the Smiler, he will lose himself before he is able to put a stop to him or free Chris, he's losing his traits (Not closing doors behind him, breaking blocks), he's slowly dying, starving, there's just no way to recover, he will fail. Or maybe that he will succeed in at least freeing Chris but at a major cost. Besides, the metaphor is probably not literal here, a "canary" doesn't need to die, something bad just needs to happen.
Or maybe it is a sign of danger but not to Andrew, but to the Smiler. Andrew's immediate bloodlust when he sees a piece of the smile is probably not lost on the Smiler. In this case, the metaphor is more literal, the piece of the smile is a "canary", it dying at the hands of Andrew is a sign of what could happen to him if he is not careful. This is something The Smiler probably didn't see coming (I don't remember if Chris actually tried to kill the pieces of the smile or not). The person he has been toying with for years has snapped and wants him dead even if he loses himself in the process. Everette's in danger as well.
I have no idea about the notes or the stands with the creeper heads tho

Maybe the smiler decided to end Chris’s spirit and the heads are to signify he is gone. Then again, there’s a theory mustering around that the person behind the creeper heads, is not Chris, but the smiler acting as Chris. In the previous episodes, we do see “Chris” get a little more direct and aggressive with his speech (as well as Andrew), and it’s a little weird why Chris needs the hat on if he is already distinct-able from the smiler, having just a black face. So the creeper heads could be an array of things, they could even just be jump-scares since I will admit, the creeper is the best mob to jump-scare someone with.
