...This is some great foreshadowing. Those lines being immediately followed by the [Monster Hunter] achievement is just a cherry on top, even if it was likely a coincidence. Good thing this video is long enough and expansive enough to not make it seem like it was just created to give us those lines.
This is a new direction I love amongst ARGs. The player's personal "hero's journey".
ARG's are usually either overbloated with nonsensical hidden lore and codes needed to decipher ridiculous puzzles, while other ones have basically no plot, and are slideshows of spooky black figures in the corner.
However, ARGs like this one make a couple smart choices to make the story of a minecraft tween finding a monster in his world feel like a proper RIVARLY between the player and the monster.
RIVARLY is a common sight in ARGs. Black shadowy figures haunting the player from afar, while the oblivious idiot is trying to find them. While those are somewhat entertaining, the entities always feel too cliche and aimless in nature. Those shadowy figures never seem to have a proper motive outside of "be spooky" and "troll the player".
What makes the rivalry with this entity so great is that it's not an omnipotent troll capable of crashing the player's game, but rather an animal trying to survive. We cannot tell if it is even trully malicious in nature, since it mostly just digs into the player's house, tears up the place and eats like five trillion porkchops before leaving. The monster seems cowardly, afraid of confrontation. There is a REASON now why the monster hides from the player. It's a beast, but a MORTAL beast. Not a 2-block-tall shadow flying around in creative, but a very vulnerable mob that abides to the survival world's rules.
The player character is also great. He is very willing to go after the monster, before chickening out when he actually encounters it. THAT is EXACTLY what most minecraft tweens would do. He is much smarter than most ARG protagonists, but also much more realistically afraid.
This makes way for a fascinating relation between a young, scared minecraft player trying to reclaim his minecraft world and a strange, scared animal trying to dominate over this newfound threat.
This isn't BLANK CAMERAMAN VS A GLITCH IN THE SYSTEM
This is SCARED BOY VS SCARED ANIMAL.
...What also adds to the value of these type of ARGs specifically, is how these seemingly paranormal experiences come off as surprisingly familiar. I mean, can't ANYBODY relate to the feeling of loading up your first minecraft world, too afraid too leave your own wooden little shack? Being scared of every little shadow and sound? Needing to find the courage to overcome the challenges presented to us?
It's so BASIC, but so EMOTIONAL and EFFECTIVE.
This story really makes us want to cheer for the player, and want us to see them succeed.
Like when we first beat the enderdragon as a child (or didn't LOL), we want to see the player overcome this monster.
